Romantic comedies are among the most difficult films to do right. Most of the time, one ends up with a decent movie that has its moments. Chemistry between actors is always important, but never more so much as in romantic comedies. 'Must Love Dogs' has one of my favorite actors, John Cusak. Historically, Diane Lane has also done some very good work, as has Dermot Mulroney. Still, John Cusack was the main draw for me.
This film is about relationships and dating after divorce and middle age. Diane Lane plays a school teacher who was divorced less than a year. Cusack plays a man whose wife left him and took everything with her (he did little to prevent that). We never really know what happened in Mulroney's case, but do know he's only separated. The why is never really an issue, but his son does say he is incorrigible (which means he likes other women, according to the son). The son is in Lane's class.
The setting isn't complex, nor overly elaborate, but could make for a good movie. Lane has dates with both men. She wants to lean toward Mulroney's good looks and savoir faire, however, something inside her says Cusak's character is a much better choice. It makes for some good mix-ups. The best scene is when she shows up for a lunch blind date with what turns out to be her dad.
Perhaps it is just me, but I really liked Cusack's slightly neurotic and wholly philosophical character. He was bizarre and unsure, but at the same time confident that Lane's character was meant for him. Much of the movie does not need to be there and seems like filler. The boy's confirmation party, the father's three girlfriends, although trying to make a point, really doesn't belong, and others that only seem to make the film to be 'full length'.
Also, I really hate it when they portray a woman as strong and secure, yet making stupid decisions. Jumping into bed with Mulroney's character just seemed like something her character would never have done. Also, eight months divorced and her whole family is trying to push her back into dating? That makes little sense. It's not like her life is almost over. All in all, it was funny and watch-able, but I wish they had focused more on the specific plot. there is more than enough material to do that.
Direction - Average. Acting - Average. Cinematography - Average. Writing - Average.
Overall, I give this movie a solid B, a good rental for a date at home.
