Kevin Costner, Renee Russo, Don Johnson, and Cheech Marin. Add to that a bunch of PGA golfers trying to act and you end up with a pretty good start for a romantic comedy. Costner plays a once college phenom golfer who plays with too much passion and ego to make it on the PGA tour (is that possible in real life?). Johnson plays a PGA Pro who was never quite as good as Costner's character in college, but is now at the top of the class in the PGA. Russo is Johnson's girlfriend who quickly falls for Costner's "inner demons". Marin is excellent as Costner's caddy.
This kind of role is perfect for Costner. He plays it well and the chemistry between he and Russo plays well on screen. Johnson's fake smiling, but I'm really an ass, golf pro is excellent as well. You really want to kick him numerous times not the least for being mean to 'old people, kids and dogs'. The best of the show goes to Marin though. He is great playing the pouting caddy who believes he can control Costner's ego despite continually failing to do so. In fact, he quits, so often their friends laugh at Russo's concerns that he lost his caddy.
The writing in this movie is well done. The plot's a little unbelievable, but not outlandish. It's one thing to win a regular tour event, but winning the US Open is a bit much (even though he actually doesn't win in the end). Yet, it's not so much that it detracts from the movie. The dialog is sharp and funny. The scene where Costner goes to get therapy from Russo is excellent, some of Costner's best acting ever.
This movie is great for golf fans and non-fans alike.
