Some moves are simply made for the critics. They mean little to the movie goers who are enticed to see them after reading thoughtful reviews. “Friends with Money” absolutely falls into this category. There are some excellent actors in this movie: Catherine Keener, Frances McDormand, Joan Cusack, Jason Issacs and, of course, Jennifer Aniston. Yet, the plot goes nowhere and the characters are a complete mess.
This movie is about a group of friends who all reach a mid-life crisis at the same time. All but one of them has a life of luxury. The one odd apple is Olivia (Aniston), who is a maid for the upper middle class. This is a sad and depressing movie, which basically says that no matter what you do, you’ll be unhappy. It doesn’t really tell the story of how this comes to be nor does it ever resolve this issue.
The characters are really underdeveloped and I often wondered what the point of it was. However, at the same time, it does make you think. If that’s all they wanted to accomplish from this movie, then they succeeded. I can’t say it would be a movie I would recommend, but it was somewhat enjoyable and thought provoking, so I also wouldn’t tell someone not to see it. It’s a decent date movie rental.
