Movies with a strong message based theme hardly ever succeed as well as the movie makers planned. They are also often judged more on that message and the character’s actions toward that end, than the movie itself. “Goal! The Dream Begins” asks the audience to think about how much they might give up to try to make a dream come true.
Santiago Munez (Kuno Becker) is a young Mexican immigrant who has a talent for soccer (football to those outside the US). Glen Foy (Stephen Dilane) is a retired one-time top soccer player/scout who finds this talented youth in the LA youth soccer fields. When he tells Santiago that a tryout with a pro soccer team in England waits for him if he can make it to England on his own, it forces Santiago to reevaluate his life. He begins a quest that seems natural, but also difficult, as he must leave his family behind. His father expects him to work at the family business, not run after dreams that are a waste of time.
It isn’t often that I simply enjoy watching a movie just because it was a pleasurable experience. I’m not a huge soccer fan, but I do like most sports to some extent. Even without the thrill of soccer for me, I just thought the movie was well-done. It was emotional and real despite what some critics might think. This is a good movie for soccer fans and movie lovers alike.
Acting – B
Director – B+
Writing – B+
Cinematography – A- (I really thought the soccer scenes were well done)
Overall, this is a good rental or even a decent matinee movie, I give it a B+.
